Children's Day around the World


June 1 is International Children's Day, a universal festival for children around the globe. However, there are many countries that observe their own children's day that feature local traditions. Let's check out how kids in these countries celebrate the occasion!

Japan

Children in Japan are very lucky as they get three children's days besides the international event.

March 3 every year is Japanese Girl's Day, or Hina Matsuri. Families with girls decorate their homes with colorful dolls to wish a happy future for their daughters.

The Boy's Day or Tango no Sekku, falls on May 5 each year in Japan. Families with boys hang colorful kites in the shape of carp, called Koinobori, outside their houses. The carp represents courage and perseverance in Japanese culture and flying a carp kite symbolizes each family's wish for their sons to grow up brave and strong.

November 15 is a day set for kids three, five and seven years old as Japanese consider children in these ages are bestowed the best luck. On this "753" children's day, youngsters of the three ages don their best kimonos and carry paper bags on their back filled with candies and toys. Their parents bring them to shrines to pray for happiness and health.

Africa

Many countries in Western Africa celebrate a special children's carnival, which usually lasts for around one month. During such celebrations, children and adults celebrate by singing and dancing and generally having a good time.

Sweden

August 7th is Boy's Day in Sweden. The day is also called the "Lobster Festival" as the boys are expected to learn the courageous spirit of the lobster.

Girls in Sweden celebrate Saint Lucia's Day on December 13. Saint Lucia is a saint revered for her love and kindness. During the festival girls dress up as Saint Lucia wearing white dresses and crowns of candles. They walk in public processions, sing a special song dedicated to the saint and hand out ginger snaps.
